laura mulvey theory

male gaze theory

jlo - on the floor
                   for the male gaze theory
men run into her throughout the video showing that she is seen as an object.
she is always wearing revealing clothing to show off her body which also makes her come across as an object.

against the male gaze theory
being driven by a chauffeur showing that she has money, power and authority
the car that she is being driven in "BMW" also shows that she has power,
gets out of the car by herself showing that she is independent.
sits in an elevated seat to show that she is above everyone else and has more power.
drinking a masculine drink which can also show that she has power.

Conclusion:
for this we see that this video does not fit as much into the male gaze theory because throughout the video j-lo is the dominant figure in the video and has the most authority.

nelly furtado - maneater

for the male gaze theory
in the center of the room surrounded by men watching her.
dominant male confronts her.

against the male gaze theory
she owns a large masculine dog which goes against the conventions of what dogs a female should have.
she is also alone at night showing that she is powerful because our usual impression of women alone at night is vulnerable, scared and alone.

Conclusion:
this video does conform to the male gaze theory because throughout the video Nelly is looked down upon by the men in the video although there are some elements of the video which goes against the male gaze theory the elements that are for the male gaze theory are stronger and have more of an impact.

scouting for girls

for the male gaze theory
slow motion shot of the girl to emphasis the fact that all the men are looking at her.
lots of reverse shots going from the girl to the men surrounding her showing that she is the center of attention and shows the reaction of the men.
close up of girl biting her lip shows that all the men our looking at her as an object.
against the male gaze theory
also because of all the men being blown away and with there jaws dropped when they see her shows that she has control.

Conclusion:
this video is more in the middle ground between conforming to the male gaze theory and going against it. throughout the video the girl is the object being idolized by all of the men in the video, but she uses her position to have power over the men.

when looking at Laura Mulveys theory I learnt about how music videos are created and what goes into them in terms of what is focused on throughout the videos and why this is.
