Production diary
In the first week we created a list of
songs that we both like and that would have an appropriate tempo for the video.
We narrowed it down to two songs both by the band a day to remember the first
was called a shot in the dark and the second was you be tails, I'll be sonic.
7/09/13
Today we were looking at Laura Mulveys
male gaze theory. This is the idea that women are idolized in music videos. This
did not help us with our video because all of the members of the band are male
and the character in the narrative is the singer in the band so we had no need
to incorporate Laura Mulveys theory into our video.
10/09/13
Today I started working on my blog and
completed my work on the Laura Mulvey theory. From this I learnt about the male
gaze theory and how it affects music videos and how different genders are
represented in music videos.
14/09/13
Today we started creating ideas for what
we wanted our video to be based around and what balance we wanted between
performance and narrative. We decided on having a larger amount of performance
compared with narrative because we wanted to create a smaller narrative and the
there were only a few parts of the song that we wanted to highlight through the
narrative in our video.
19/09/13
Today I completed my conventions of a
music video this helped to know what should be in a music video and why certain
music videos look how they look and helped to form some of our ideas for how
our video should look.
22/09/13
Today we planned who we wanted to be in
our music video and started to discuss location ideas. This helped us with
knowing what we could do in terms of instruments because most of the people we
know can play guitar, bass or drums. The main problem we faced was finding a
day when everyone would be free. Finding a location also proved difficult
because of where we live, where we live the transport is expensive and would
take us a long time to get anywhere and the locations that we could have used
where we live are not the best locations for filming.
25/09/13
Today we made our final choice as to which
song we wanted to use, we went with you be tails I'll be sonic. We came to this
decision because of the tempo of the song. With you be tails I’ll be sonic
there isn't one continues tempo it varies throughout so we chose this one
because the style of shots that we wanted would be more doable with this song.
29/09/13
Today I completed my Andrew Goodwin music
video analysis task. From doing this I learnt why different songs used
narrative, performance or both. After finding out this we were then able
to
4/10/13
Today we annotated the lyrics to the song
deciding on what shots would work were and were the performance would go and
were the narrative would go. From this we decided that we wanted to have less
narrative and more performance this is because there are a few lines throughout
the song that we wanted to highlight using narrative and by using less
narrative this would then make it more apparent that the lines are significant
to the narrative.
8/10/13
Today I got on with doing some of the work
that I hadn't finished yet, I completed my what music means to me presentation
and my history of music presentation. From doing this it gave me an
understanding of how music and music videos have changed also by looking past
music videos form bands within our genre this allowed me to know what balance
of narrative and performance was right for our genre and what types of shots
and what editing techniques are used.
16/10/13
Today I uploaded everything to do with the
preliminary task including the preliminary task itself the evaluation and the
planning. This helped to know what possible continuity errors and what easy
mistakes we could make when filming and how we could avoid them.
18/10/13
Today I started work on the treatment
sheet, mainly looking at deciding a style for our band and what they would be
like and who would listen to them. This helped us to decide on who we would
want to be in our video by looking at who fits the image that we wanted our
band to have.
22/10/13
Today I finished the treatment sheet which
consisted of our influences, artist’s style and form location, target audience,
technology and logistics. From doing this we had a plan to work to regarding
what we wanted to do and how we would achieve what we wanted.
1/11/13
Today we discussed shot ideas and what
would work and what wouldn't with our style and song and the way we wanted the
video to look. Whilst doing this we came up with the idea of having our main
character in the narrative confronting himself we would do this by filming two
clips and over lapping them.
12/11/13
I completed my star profile based around
the band Billy Talent. This helped towards choosing the style of the band. This
also helped when creating a digipak for our bands album because we had an idea
of what sort of background the band would have.
15/11/13
I collected the feedback from our
class pitches for our video concepts and put them onto a table and uploaded it.
This allowed us to check through our planning to make sure that we were
matching what people were suggesting.
16/11/13
Today was our first day of filming we
managed to get the majority of the narrative filmed and some of the clips
edited. After filming we realised some errors with lighting that we fix in
either editing or re film them next weekend.
21/11/13
I spent these lessons checking our
storyboard to make sure that all of the shots that we wanted to film were there
if any were missing I made sure to add them in, I also storyboarded some of the
performance so we had a starting point.
23/11/13
We constructed a risk assessment sheet so
we knew what to be careful of doing when filming on the Sunday. This helped us
to find out what we could and couldn't film due to possible risks that could
occur when we are filming.
25/11/13
Today was our second day of filming, we
learnt from our mistakes from last week’s filming by starting earlier and
making sure we had all of the outside shots filmed, we also filmed more of each
shot to ensure that we could find two decent shots that we could slice together
in editing to eliminate any lighting changes.
26/11/13
Today I analysed some of A2 music videos
to see what is good and bad about previous work. From this I was able to find
out what we could do to make ours better and how we could improve the
continuity of our video compared with previous ones.
3/12/13
Today I compared my blog to previous year
13 blogs to see what I could add to mine and to find out what is better about
mine, from this I decided to change my labels on my blog to make it easier to
find my work. I also found out what I could add to my blog to help with my
understanding of how to prepare, film and create a music video and the band in
our music video.
4/12/13
I made some changes to some of my blog
posts and changed what posts were under each label to make sure that each post
was under a more relevant label.
5/12/13
Today I received my peer feedback and
acted upon it to improve my posts. This helped me to add to my posts and add
information to better my understanding of different areas of the course and how
that could help my video.
6/12/13
Today I made a post with a collection of
all the feedback I had given and been given.
10/12/13
Today I added some evaluation to my own
work regarding what I had learnt after doing each task. This helped me see where
I could improve or add to my work but did mean that I had to completely redo
some pieces of my coursework.
11/12/13
Today I did some more peer assessment and
tried to add more to my posts based on peer assessment that I had been given.
By peer assessing someone else's blog it allowed me to see what I could add to
my blog to improve it.
19/12/13
Today I complete a power point based
around the conventions of a band website to help us in the future with creating
our own. This included some good information that we used to base our website
around but it didn't go into other areas of a website that we could have
included.
29/12/13
Today I emailed our back up venue to try
and arrange a day when we can film but didn't get a reply. This helped use to
know that we should have contacted the venue when asking our preferred venue so
we had two definite venues that we could have used.
07/01/14
I conducted some research into digipaks
and how bands in our genre present theirs and what they include. This would
help us because it would give us a basis of what to include and how to layout
our digipak. This was also a difficult task because it made it hard to come up
with an original idea for the digipak.
13/01/14
Today I started to plan what we were going
to include in our digipak and what style and layout would work best with our
band. By the end I had a rough idea of what we were going to include in the
digipak but I couldn't decide on what should go where and where the images
should go.
20/01/14
I did some more in depth research into our
target audience and how we can use our target audience to promote the band.
This helped to expand how we could promote our band but would be a difficult
process.
31/1/14
today I created a video talking through our storyboard and what shots we want to include in our final video. this helped us to have a ruff guideline of what we want to do in our video.
4/2/14
We filmed the majority of the performance
at the hermit and took pictures for the digipak and website.
12/2/14
Today I went back through my blog posts and added comments on what I had learnt from the tasks and how they helped me when preparing and filming my media music video. This helped to re-enforce what I had learnt and should help when completing my evaluation for my coursework.
1/3/14
We completed and uploaded the website for our band. Form this I learnt how to create a website and how to present a website to be able to show a specific theme and how to make it fit with the genre of music that the band is in.
5/3/14
today we finalized the website with the peer feedback we received.
10/3/14
Today we finished editing the first draft of our music video, form doing this we learnt how we should pace the shots to match the song and how to colour balance shots.
13/3/14
We went and got audience feedback for our 2nd draft of our video this helped us to be able to completely finish the video and end up with the finished product.
18/3/14
today we uploaded the final version of our music video.
20/3/14
today I complete finished everything on my blog and made sure all posts were up and all of my labels were correct.
10/4/14
today I uploaded the first of the evaluation questions, this one was to do with how all of the various parts of our product fit together to make one whole product.
