conventions of a music video

camera shots: most long shots close ups and mid shots are used to put emphasis on the artist. close ups are mainly used to emphasis the lyrics of the song by showing the singers lips. close ups can also be used to show the emotions of the song through the facial expression and the body language of the singer this is seen in the a day to remember-have faith in me music video where a lot of close ups side shots of the singer are used to highlight the main lines of the song. for the narrative of most music videos they use lots of panning shots and  establishing shots to show were the narrative is set. they then go on to use mid shots

camera movement: the camera movement can be used to show the theme or the meaning behind the lyrics. they use a lot of high and low angle shots to show to the view whether the song is

Mise en scene: this is the use of props lighting performers that are used to create a music video. For the performance of most music videos the artist or band is set in one location e.g. a dark room have faith in me music video, a stage Mr Brightside music video or in a garage blink 182 first date music video.
The Mise en scene for have faith in me and first date are similar in the way that both narratives are based around two people and a group and there story behind the song and the lyrics. they also use lighting effectively to help portray the emotion behind the song for example in have faith in me the lighting is quite dark and most shots are dully light to show that it is a sad story in the narrative and to also emphasis the downward spiral that the story is conveying to the audience.

lighting: the lighting for the performance of have faith in me is very minimal when the song takes a more sad and depressing feel the lighting is dark and when the song is more positive there are a few bright lights dotted around the room and the band members are well light other then this there isn't any lighting used. whereas in the first date music video

costume: the costumes that are used in music videos are used to show the style of the band through the performance and in the narrative they are used to show the mood and emotion of the characters and are used to show what the style of the music video is for example in have faith in me the costumes of the band match the style of the band and at the same time match the style of the music video and the song.

editing: in most music videos jump cuts are mainly used to match the pace of the song. they are also used to make it easier to switch from one scene to another.

looking at the conventions of a music video helped with deciding on the length of our performance and narrative sections of our video. I was also able to find out about how the characters in the videos were portrayed so I knew how to show them in our video.

  1. Good amount of detail and looking at conventions of a music video will help in filming and follow the stereotypes of music videos
